Subject: Agenda for Faculty Senate Leadership Discussion Tuesday Jan 18 2:30PM Chancellor Plowman and Provost Zomchick, We hope that you had a refreshing break and we look forward to collaborating with you this semester to enhance the variety of initiatives that you have been emphasizing regarding the Strategic Vision. Thank you for arranging to meet with us on Tuesday January 18 at 2:30PM in the AHT 5th Floor Conference room. Below are some topics for possible discussion. We have not listed pandemic issues but if there have been changes in options for the campus by the time we meet, we would certainly appreciate the opportunity to provide input. 1. Academic Structure Review. We appreciate the challenges that the pandemic has brought about regarding plans for obtaining broad input on potential changes. We would like to present three different examples that align with three of the alternatives in the Working Group report. We have not discussed these alternatives except among ourselves and would like to get your comments before bringing them up for further discussion. These are motivating examples though that we suggest could encourage broad engagement and alternative suggestions, as the Working Group report encourages. In conjunction with this, we would like to discuss the timing of the process for input and review in the next steps of campus involvement prior to further deliberations by the Working Group. 2. NTT Faculty discussions. As per our discussions previously, we have held some informal meetings with the Senate NTT Issues Committee leadership and would like to discuss how the Senate might move forward to align with your suggestions about expanding the opportunities for NTT faculty here. We are attaching the report from the Provost's Task Force from last year which aligns with your suggestions about new faculty titles of Assistant/Assoc/Full Teaching Professors. We suggest that there is considerable current workload flexibility for NTT faculty, if these are utilized broadly. 3. TT faculty hiring. Given that the Deans will be having much greater control over hiring, and the expectation that there will be a significant drop on TT faculty next year due to the incentive program, we suggest having a broad discussion regarding future faculty trends. Under BAM there will be financial incentives to hire NTT faculty, and it isn't clear how to incentivize expenditures on graduate students and TT faculty. We have submitted a draft template to the Provost for possible use by the Senate Budget and Planning Committee in its deliberations to provide input to the Executive Budget Committee, which we suggest could assist as well in tracking the relative allocation of instruction. 4. Academic Freedom and Teaching about Race, Gender and Diversity. There is a draft resolution submitted to the Senate on these matters and we would like to make sure you are aware that this could induce additional concerns from certain constituencies. Stay well, Lou
