From: "Zomchick, John P" Date: Sunday, September 19, 2021 at 12:23 PM To: "Gross, Louis J" Cc: "Scoggins, Matthew" , "Driskill, Owen" , "Young, Lela M" , "Cross, Angie (Angie)" Subject: Dr Anming Hu and tomorrow's Senate meeting Lou, I have consulted with OGC about the presence of someone from outside the faculty senate membership or administrative ranks at the Senate meeting tomorrow. As you'll recall, when we first discussed Dr. Hu's case, we discussed the restrictions regarding broadcasting of information in an ongoing personnel matter. OGC informed us that faculty senators have a right to know some details about the case to participate effectively in shared governance. Those outside the senate do not have the same need-to-know. For that reason, the administration is limited in its ability to talk about the case. Following that advice, we decided that the best way forward was for me to address the senate verbally at its first meeting of AY21-22. Because you informed me on Friday that someone from outside the senate (a reporter from Science) will attend tomorrow's meeting, I will not be able to speak about this personnel matter. I spoke to Lela Young earlier today. She is willing to meet again to offer clarification of what and to whom information about this personnel matter can be shared. If you would like to meet, please let Angie Cross know tomorrow. In the meantime, I will write to Senator Lyons to offer to meet in person with the Faculty Affairs committee to address the questions that they sent to me. Best regards, John John P.
