Math 151 - Fall 2015
Mathematics for the Life Sciences

Course Materials

NOTICE: Expectations Prior to the First Class meeting:
  (i) Download and install MATLAB on your computer (See syllabus for links on how to do the install);
  (ii) Read Chapter 1 of the Textbook and look at the assignment for the first class day.

NOTES: Changes from Original Syllabus:
  Exam 2 is moved from Monday October 26 to Thursday October 29. The October 29 class will spend the first 15 minutes going over any questions regarding the course material, and then the exam will last 60 minutes.
  Exam 3 is moved from Wednesday November 18 to Thursday November 19. The November 19 class will spend the first 15 minutes going over any questions regarding the course material, and then the exam will last 60 minutes.

NOTES: Changes of due date for Matlab Project 4 - assignment 17 :
   This is now due on Thursday Nov 3. One of your colleagues pointed out an issue to me that could have caused errors in your results if you used the LeslieFecundity.m file as a template for doing parts 1 (c), (d) and (e) of the project. I have placed a new versions of the Matlab code, called LeslieFecundityV2.m on the matlabfiles page linked below that corrects this issue.

NOTES: Another change in Project 4 on Bison Matrix Model
   One of your colleagues pointed out a problem he was having understanding the output for problem 1 (e) in the project. It turns out that when you set adult survivorship = 0 in this part, all the eigenvalues are the same magnitude and the code then doesn't necessarily pick out the positive (not a complex number) eigenvalue and may get the eigenvector wrong too. So it is best for 1 (e) to not run it with the zero case for survivorship. That is use a vector like sa=[.3 .5 .75 .95 .99]; rather than sa=[0 .3 .5 .75 .95 .99].

NOTES: Review Days for Exam3 and for Final Exam
   We will have time on Wednesday November 18 to review the material for Exam3, which covers Chapters 10-13 of the text. Monday November 30 (our last class meeting) will be a review of the entire course in preparation for the Final Exam. I will post a Sample Exam 3 and a Sample Final exam.
